Methanogenic degradation of hydroquinone and catechol via reductive dehydroxylation to phenol
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fermentative degradation of hydroquinone, catechol, and phenol was demonstrated with nearly-homogeneous mixed methanogenic cultures obtained from freshwater sediments and sewage sludge by enrichment with the respective phenolic substrates. Gram-negative short rods predominated in these cultures, together with hydrogenand acetate-utilizirtg methanogens. Acetate and methane were the only degradation products. Bacteria enriched with hydroquinone or catechol also degraded phenol and p-hydroxy-benzoate, but not resorcinol or resorcylic acids. Phenol was formed as an intermediate during catechol and hydroquinone degradation, indicating that reductive dehydroxylation was the primary event in degradation of these substrates. Inhibition experiments with bromoethanesulfonate and acetylene indicated that catechol, hydroquinone, and phenol degradation depended on a syntrophic co-operation of fermenting bacteria and hydrogen-oxidizing methanogens.

Anaerobic degradation of catechol by Desulfobacterium sp. strain Cat2 proceeds via carboxylation to protocatechuate.
Under anoxic conditions, most methoxylated mononuclear aromatic compounds are degraded by bacteria, with catechol being formed as an important intermediate. On the basis of our experiments with the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfobacterium sp. strain Cat2, we describe for the first time the enzymatic activities involved in the complete anaerobic oxidation of catechol and protocatechuate. Resu...
متن کاملSolar Photocatalytic Degradation of Phenol in Aqueous Solutions Using Titanium Dioxide
In this study, photocatalytic degradation of phenol by titanium dioxide (TiO2) in aqueous solution was evaluated. The UV energy of solar light was utilized by compound parabolic collectors (CPCs) technology. The effect of irradiation time, initial pH, and dosage of TiO2 were investigated. Aromatic intermediates (catechol, benzoquinone, and hydroquinone) were quantified during the reaction to st...
متن کاملDegradation of Phenol in Wastewater Using Anolyte Produced from Electrochemical Generation of Brine Solution
This paper presents the degradation of phenol in wastewater using anolyte, which is generated from electrochemical activation process. Anolyte consists of reactive ions and free radicals, which contribute to its oxidizing behavior. The optimum conditions, which facilitate a complete degradation of phenol, were found using variation of dosage of anolyte and reaction time. It was found that about...

A new type of [Bi6O6(OH)3](NO3)3·1.5H2O sheets photocatalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal route. The photocatalytic properties were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD and UV spectroscopy. It exhibited slightly better photocatalytic activity on phenol degradation than that of classic TiO2 P25 under UV illumination. Hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol, and benzoquinone were identified as photode...

The contribution of irradiation and the dihydroxybenzenes (DHB), catechol (CAT) and hydroquinone (HQ), added or formed as phenol oxidation intermediates, was evaluated for the reduction of Fe and for phenol degradation via Fenton processes. The formation of CAT and HQ was observed during phenol degradation starting with Fe or Fe in the presence or absence of irradiation and their presence incre...
